Event description

Twenty-four teams from the Kaitseliit (Defense League) volunteer corps and the defense forces of Estonia, as well as from Finland, Latvia, Poland and the U.K. are to start the Utria Assault reconnaissance challenge at Ahtme, northeastern Estonia at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The biggest number of teams will be fielded by the Tallinn District of Kaitseliit -- one each from the North subunit, the Toompea and Kalev subunits, as well as a Naval Division women's team. The Scouts Battalion will field three teams and the Jogeva, Rapla, Parnu and Jarva districts of Kaitseliit two teams each, ERNA Society, which organizes the event, said. The length of the course is approximately 60 kilometers and the number of checkpoints this year is bigger than in previous years. Utria Assault has been held since 1999 to commemorate the largest landing operation of the Estonian Navy in the War of Independence that took place on Jan. 17-19, 1919. The aim of the operation was to support the advance of land forces towards the city of Narva. In the course of the operation Narva was liberated from Red Army troops.
