John McCain arrived in Riga
Place: Riga, Latvia
US Senator John McCain arrived in the capital of Latvia, to reaffirm the inviolability of the Baltic-American relations. In particular, McCain stated that the election of Trump for the position of the president of the United States took us by surprise, but US relations with the NATO partners will remain the same. McCain pointed out that the United States will undoubtedly continue to participate in the Baltic countries destiny, because the behavior of Russia in this region is becoming more aggressive.
I believe we should maintain communications and conversations with Russia just as we did all during the Cold War. But I also think we need to lay out certain parameters of behaviour that can not go on responding to. We just talked about illegal occupation of Crimea, we've talked about invade to the Eastern Ukraine and the scene, where artillery shells have landed and have killed people, who are fighting for the freedom of the Ukraine. So, I am not in any way opposed to communication, but I believe there are relations with Baltic countries including this one, that are single and very important relations to preserve. So, Vladimir Putin now continues to at least be a sponsor of ciber attacks, that we know came from Russia, which were designed to effect the outcome of the free and fair elections, something, that hasn' t happen in Russia for a long time and we intend to do what ever we can to see that that' s not possible, because we have to preserve the fundamental of the free ellection, because that' s the basis of democracy. So we would be glad to correspond and to communicate with mr. Putin. I guess, he' d have to lift sanctions of me, before I could go visit him, but the fact is that we have to be steadfast in our defencive democracy.
