Event description

The language centre of Latvia issued a call to the people of the country to speak at the workplace only in the Latvian language. The rule will apply to specialists in nearly all areas of service, shops, public transport, offices or agencies. The language centre of Latvia, designed to monitor the use of the official language in the workplace, believes that it is unacceptable that workers fullfill their duties and professional responsibilities, communicating in a foreign language. This call has already caused a storm of indignation among the Russian-speaking population of Latvia, people are not going to abandon their native language for the sake of another whim of the authorities.

Interview

Sarmite Pavulina
the representative of the state language Center
01:06-01:33(lv) This is simply an appeal to those employees who work in the public sphere. The conductors, sellers in stores. This call lets people know how important the Latvian language in Latvia is. Some Latvians feel uncomfortable to listen and they don't understand what the staff is talking about, if they speak Russian.
