Event description

The summit "Russia and the West: reality and prospects" which was held in Vilnius was visited by the ex-head of Yukos Mikhail Khodorkovsky. He surprised the press, urging the West to reconsider sanctions against Russia. "The sanctions have played a positive role, but the long-term effect of these sanctions in their current form looks questionable," said Khodorkovsky. According to him, the existing sanctions have given the opportunity for promotion to create an image of an external enemy and, thus, contributed to the consolidation of Russian society, providing the regime with the level of support, "which he under other circumstances, could not count on". Khodorkovsky encouraged to seek for more efficient, selective and designed for prolonged use measures the effect of which in the future will not outweigh their positive influence."

00:50-02:18(ru) the events of the past year show that Europe is very close to the zone of turbulence. Among other things, the Ukrainian crisis has become the new constant in European politics. It will not end tomorrow. Psychologically you need to be prepared to the necessity to use the tools of prolonged exposure to Russia, not intended for year and maybe not for another desjateletie. Europe for a long time ignored the signals on violation of human rights in Russia, the destruction of the judicial system, the degradation of democracy. It was considered a detail that should not affect politics. But now, when Ukraine flared, Europe woke up and remembered that it needed to learn to coexist with aggressive mode.
