Remembrance day of the Latvian legionnaires
Place: Riga, Latvia
Several hundred ultranationalists, including seven veterans of Nazi Germany’s Waffen SS, march through Riga. Veterans of the Latvian Legion, a force that was commanded by the German Nazi Waffen SS during WWII, and their sympathizers carry flowers as they walk to the Monument of Freedom in Riga. The march, which is Europe’s only annual event by Waffen SS veterans, draws a handful of counter-protesters from Latvia’s Jewish community and about 40 anti-fascist activists, including 20 Germans, Efraim Zuroff, the Israel director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center
01:36 - 02:16 (En) These people being represented as freedom fighters, as people who paid their way for Latvian independence. But nothing could be further from the truth. Because nazi Germany had absolutely no intention of giving Latvia or Lithuania or Estonia independence. So the only reason they did democratic today is because nazi Germany lost the world war two. But I want to add another thing. We should not confuse the opposition to this march and to attempt to rewrite history of World War two and holocaust with Russian propaganda calling Latvia nazi state. Latvia is not a nazi state, Latvia has democracy, a better democracy that the Russia has today.
