September 23 - National Holocaust Remembrance Day in Lithuania. On this day in 1943, the Vilnius ghetto was liquidated, which meant a complete sweep of the Lithuanian capital from Jews. In total, 195,000 local Jews died in Lithuania during World War II. Before the war, there were 205 thousand of them. In Soviet times, it was not customary to talk about the tragedy of the Holocaust in Lithuania. The Communist Party believed that such openness could lead to interethnic conflicts. However, there are practically no cities in Lithuania where the murders of Jews in 1941-1944 did not take place. In many cases, the Jewish population was subjected to genocide even before the arrival of the Nazis. Today in the town of Ponyriai, where 70 thousand Lithuanian and Western European Jews found their own grave, a commemorative event was held, which was attended by the highest officials of Lithuania.
